PANABO CITY, DAVAO DEL NORTE - In the quest to equip the Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) in Davao Region with the necessary knowledge and skills in pest identification and sustainable control methods, ATI-RTC XI conducted a Training of Trainers on Integrated Pest Management (TOT-IPM) for Rice Production from March 17 to 21, 2025.
IPM for rice aims to optimize production while maximizing profits through various practices. In addition, IPM minimizes the risks to the environment and human health as it is an alternative way to decrease the reliance on pesticides as pest control.
During the interactive discussions, the 30 AEWs explored different concepts and principles of IPM, which included ecological engineering, insecticide-resistant management, biological control agents, the role of natural enemies, and safe handling of crop protection products.
Moreover, participants gained practical experience through the Agroecosystem Analysis (AESA) approach and collected and identified rice insect pests.
Mr. Wilson Curit from LGU Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, expressed his gratitude, saying, "The training is relevant to my line of work. With the help of this training, I have loads to share with my colleagues and local farmers in my municipality. Thank you for the support and opportunity, ATI-RTC XI."
The training concluded with participants presenting their re-entry plans, which can be used for future planning in their respective areas. This five-day training is PRC accredited with 22 CPD points for licensed professionals.
Resource persons for the TOT-IPM for rice production included Mr. Ernie L. Malazarte of ATI-RTC XI, Ms. Cheery Agrade of Fertilizer and Pest Authority XI, and Dr. Larry V. Aceres of the University of Southeastern Philippines - Mabini Campus.
ATI-RTC XI consistently leads this specialized training program to strengthen pest management strategies and enhance agricultural practices across the region.
