Journey to Agripreneurship: Empowering Farmer Leaders for Sustainable Agriculture

NABUNTURAN, DAVAO DE ORO—In the heart of Davao de Oro, a group of 34 farmer leaders took a significant step towards transforming their traditional farming practices into thriving agribusiness ventures. Over 10 days, these farmers participated in the Training of Trainers on Farm Business School (TOT-FBS) for Rice-Based Enterprises, held at Comval Hotel in Nabunturan from February 10-14 and 17-21, 2025.

The training was designed to empower farmers with the knowledge to transform their agricultural efforts into sustainable businesses. In addition to being producers, these farmer leaders are now poised to become agripreneurs—innovators who view farming as both a livelihood and a business opportunity.

The intensive training focused on essential topics to operate a successful farm enterprise. Participants explored concepts and principles such as Filipino values in business, the agricultural business cycle, financial recording, bookkeeping, auditing, savings mobilization, and risk management. They also delved into vital courses like group marketing, contract farming, value addition, and business plan development. To bridge theory with practice, hands-on activities such as market surveys and business plan presentations were integrated into the program.

Experts guided the farmer leaders throughout the training. Ms. Melanie Geolagon and Ms. Madel Llano from the Agricultural Credit Policy shared their insights on financial strategies for farmers. Ms. Ofelia A. Sanchez shared her expertise in farm enterprise management.

Faculty members from the University of Southeastern PhilippinesMabini Campus, including Ms. Emelie G. Pelicano, Ms. Liza May M. Lamban, and Mr. Lauro Aguanta, provided valuable lessons in agribusiness development. Also, the DA-AMAD personnel, led by Mr. Marvin Auxillo, shared key insights on business plan preparation and guided participants in crafting one.

To wrap up the training, participants showcased their newly developed business plans, engaging in interactive discussions with a panel of experts and fellow trainees. Beyond gaining technical knowledge, the experience reshaped their perspectives on farming—highlighting the importance of financial literacy in agricultural production.

Through this initiative, ATI-RTC XI hopes that the farmer leaders to catalyze change. With their new skills and business knowledge, they are equipped to not only enhance their own livelihoods but also inspire and guide others in their communities.
