The Agricultural Training Institute - Regional Training Center XII (ATI-RTC XII), through its High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), successfully conducted a 3-day intensive training session on "Technology Updating on Bulb Onion Production and Management" for selected vegetable farmer-leaders in Makilala, Cotabato. Held from June 19 to 22, 2024, the event aimed to enhance the efficiency and yield of onion production by imparting the latest agricultural techniques to local farmers.
The training was spearheaded by Mr. Neiven Jay V. Abila, a recognized expert in onion cultivation. During the first two days, participants were introduced to critical Cultural Management Practices in Onion, including pest and disease management, as well as postharvest practices. The sessions offered in-depth insights into maximizing onion yield while maintaining sustainable farming methods.
On the third day, participants engaged in a hands-on learning experience with a field trip to a local bulb onion farm. They actively took part in land and seedbed preparation, planting bulb onion seeds, and implementing the techniques they had learned during the classroom sessions. This practical exposure reinforced their understanding of the subject and helped build confidence in applying their new skills in real-world settings.
ATI-RTC XII, under the guidance of HVCDP Focal Person Ms. Mercedita G. Aglibot and Alternate Focal Person Ms. Anareystel P. Lape, expressed gratitude to the Municipal Agriculture Service Office (MASO) of Makilala for their support in making the training a success. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the region's onion production and strengthen the capabilities of local farmer-leaders in Makilala.
