Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat – The Agricultural Training Institute - Regional Training Center XII (ATI-RTC XII), in partnership with the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), officially opened the 5-day Training of Trainers (TOT) on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Durian Production on May 19, 2025, at the AV Belo Hall. The activity gathers 30 agricultural extension workers (AEWs) from across Region XII, many of whom are returning participants from last year’s TOT on Durian Production and Management.
The training is designed to deepen the technical skills and practical knowledge of AEWs in durian farming, with a focus on sustainable and standardized production practices. Engr. Jun Rey L., in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of continuous learning in agriculture, encouraging participants to stay proactive in enhancing their competencies and sharing what they learn with local farmers.
One of the key highlights of the opening day was the industry overview presented by Mr. Virgilio Loquias, a retired Supervising Agriculturist from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Davao. He shared insights into high-performing durian varieties, their desirable traits, and the optimal conditions required for successful cultivation. His session provided participants with foundational knowledge essential for guiding farmers toward better yields and quality.
The ongoing training, which runs until May 23, 2025, is facilitated by ATI-RTC XII’s dedicated team led by DMO I Ms. Mercedita G. Aglibot, Technical Staff II Ms. Gladys Hazel E. Café, and Mr. Jay-ar D. Abdillah, an On-the-Job Trainee from Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU). This initiative reinforces ATI-RTC XII’s commitment to capacitating agricultural frontliners, promoting GAP-certified durian farms, and advancing the competitiveness of Region XII’s high-value crop industry.
