The Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center XII (ATI-RTC XII), through the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), successfully concluded a comprehensive Training on Coconut Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Batch 1 in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Held from September 16-18, 2024, in Brgy. Limo-ok, Lamitan City, Basilan Province, the training aimed to strengthen the technical expertise of coconut farmers by providing in-depth knowledge on sustainable pest management practices.

The training began with an industry overview presented by Acting Senior Agriculturist Lemuel M. Soriano, who shared insights into the Philippine coconut industry’s current landscape under the CFIDP. His presentation highlighted recent challenges and emerging opportunities for BARMM’s coconut sector. Mr. Ibrahim P. Uto, Chairman of LARBECO, opened the event by welcoming the participants and encouraging them to leverage the knowledge gained to enhance coconut production in their communities.

Acting Senior Agriculturist Soriano led sessions covering the fundamentals of coconut morphology and physiology and the identification of common diseases affecting coconut trees. Participants gained insights into effective IPM practices, emphasizing both preventive and reactive strategies. Contributing further expertise were Ms. Elvira S. Perez, who addressed Rhinoceros Beetle infestations; Mr. Moner A. Paredes, who discussed the management of Brontispa insect pests; and Ms. Samsiya T. Munjalal, who provided guidance on controlling the Asiatic Palm Weevil.

The training combined theoretical discussions with hands-on exercises, enabling participants to observe and apply pest management techniques directly relevant to their local farming environments. Participants learned how to identify signs of infestations early, understand pest lifecycles, and employ appropriate IPM techniques to mitigate damage sustainably.

In his closing remarks, Division Chief I Diosdado A. Espinosa Jr. expressed sincere appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and LARBECO, acknowledging their essential roles in supporting the region's coconut industry. Edilberto S. Martinez, Manager of LARBECO, also conveyed his gratitude to ATI-RTC XII for organizing the event within their cooperative, underscoring the value of bringing specialized training directly to the community.

This training initiative underscores ATI-RTC XII’s commitment to advancing sustainable agricultural practices within BARMM, equipping coconut farmers with practical knowledge to improve yield, reduce losses, and contribute to the long-term growth of the coconut industry.
