The first comprehensive Durian Training Program kicked off on July 15, 2024, at the ATI-RTC XII Session Hall in Brgy. San Felipe, Tantangan, South Cotabato. Designed to harness the potential of durian for the agricultural sector, this program brings together 30 Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) from across Region 12 for in-depth training. The curriculum covers postharvest handling, processing innovations, and marketing techniques aimed at enhancing the durian supply chain to benefit local farmers.
The event opened with Ms. Simona P. Dela Cruz, CDMS Section Head, who welcomed participants and expressed gratitude for their dedication to this learning opportunity. Ms. Mercedita G. Aglibot, HVCDO Focal Person, provided a detailed overview of the course, and Ms. Anareystel P. Lape, HVCDP Program technical staff, led a session to set clear expectations for the training.
Sir Virgilio L. Loquias presented the first lecture, “Durian Orchard Establishment and Management in Sync with GAP,” highlighting the importance of orchard planning and durian seedling establishment to achieve higher yields.
This five-day program includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on practice at durian farms in Davao City. By the conclusion of the training, AEWs will have the knowledge and practical skills to promote sustainable durian farming, strengthening the region’s durian industry. This initiative is a vital step in supporting local farmers and building a resilient agricultural economy in the Philippines.
