Tantangan, South Cotabato – The Native Cattle Production and Management training (Batch 1) officially began on June 2, 2025, at the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center XII (ATI-RTC XII). The initiative brings together farmers, livestock technicians, and stakeholders aiming to enhance their knowledge and skills in sustainable cattle production.
Engr. Teofilo T. Jumawan Jr., Planning Officer II of ATI-RTC XII, opened the training with a welcoming message and a comprehensive overview of its objectives. He underscored the growing potential of cattle farming as a diversification strategy in Region XII, particularly in coconut-dominated farming areas. Engr. Jumawan also addressed key agricultural challenges and emerging opportunities, setting a clear learning path for the training’s duration.
After a brief intermission, Ms. Ma. Gladys M. Caliza, Assistant Professor IV from Mindanao State University-General Santos, took the floor to present Modules 1 and 2. Her presentation began with a thorough analysis of the "Status of the Cattle Industry in the Philippines," covering production statistics, evolving market demands, and industry-wide issues such as disease prevalence and the rising cost of inputs. She provided both macro and local perspectives, giving participants a grounded understanding of their role in the broader livestock sector.
Transitioning to Module 2, Ms. Caliza tackled "Housing and Facilities" for native cattle, emphasizing biosecurity, climate-appropriate structures, and efficient resource use. Her session included insights on cost-effective designs and maintenance strategies to promote animal health and performance. Participants were engaged throughout the presentation, asking questions and exchanging views, which Ms. Caliza welcomed with expertise and clarity.
The first day concluded with participants motivated by the practical and relevant information shared. With strong foundational knowledge laid down, they expressed eagerness for the upcoming modules and hands-on sessions that will further refine their competencies in native cattle management.
