TANTANGAN, South Cotabato – From July 1 to 3, 2024, rice farmer leaders in the region gathered for an intensive training on Duck Production Technology and the Integrated Rice-Based Farming System, held at the ALC Hall by the Agricultural Training Institute—Regional Training Center XII (ATI—RTC XII). This training seeks to elevate local agricultural practices through the integration of rice-duck farming, an innovative approach that enhances soil fertility and pest control, while providing an additional income source for farmers.
Engr. Jun Rey L. Samillano, OIC - Section Head of PAS, inaugurated the event with an overview of the program, highlighting the benefits of adopting sustainable farming practices. Ma'am Shirley L. Beldia, OIC of ATI - RTC XII, provided further encouragement, stressing the transformative potential of these new techniques to boost both yield and income. Her words reinforced the value of innovation in today’s farming landscape.
A focal point of the training was led by Mr. Jaybee S. Talatala, an Agricultural Technologist from the Municipal Agriculture Office of Tantangan, who presented on the Palay-Check System and the benefits of Rice-Duck Integration. His insights equipped participants with a comprehensive understanding of effective practices, from utilizing ducks in weed and pest management to enhancing rice productivity through ecological balance.
This training underscores ATI-RTC XII’s commitment to empowering farmers with practical skills and forward-thinking knowledge, ultimately fostering sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods for rice farmer communities in South Cotabato.
