Twenty-five seed growers from Region XII and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) recently completed a 3-day Refresher Course on Inbred Rice Production and Certification. Held from June 19, 2024, at the ALC Hall of ATI-RTC XII in Tantangan, South Cotabato, this training aimed to strengthen the skills and knowledge of seed growers crucial for the region’s rice industry.

Engr. Jun Rey L. Samillano, Agriculturist II and OIC-Section Head of PAS, warmly welcomed the participants on behalf of the OIC-Center Director. He emphasized the importance of seed growers in sustaining and improving the rice industry in BARMM and Region XII. The technical sessions covered various topics, including the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF), introduced by Mr. Joseph M. Simpao, the RCEF Program technical staff. Simpao discussed the key programs under RCEF, such as the seed, mechanization, and credit programs, which are vital for boosting rice farmers' competitiveness.

Additionally, Mr. Jason V. Abang, another RCEF Program technical staff member, presented an in-depth analysis of the rice industry in Region XII and the Philippines. His discussion underscored the current challenges and opportunities within the industry, with a particular focus on the role of certified seed growers. The course was interactive, fostering an open dialogue among the participants, enabling them to exchange insights on rice production and certification.

This refresher course is a significant step towards reinforcing the capacity of seed growers in BARMM and Region XII, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of rice production and sustainability in the region.
