The Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center XII (ATI-RTC XII) successfully conducted the third batch of the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) Coaching and Mentoring from May 14–16, 2025, at the ATI XII Training Center in San Felipe, Tantangan, South Cotabato.
The three-day activity brought together 16 participants from the OPAMCO PGS Group (Sarangani), BFAC PGS Group (Tacurong), and Ilocano Farmers Association (Tantangan), all of whom are actively promoting organic agriculture in their respective communities. The training aimed to enhance their knowledge and capabilities in managing PGS initiatives and in developing their Manuals of Operation and Internal Standards.
Ms. Ma. Corazon E. Sorilla, the Regional Organic Agriculture Focal Person, formally opened the training by warmly welcoming all participants. She highlighted how these systems empower local farmers and stakeholders by promoting transparency, trust, and shared responsibility in upholding organic standards.
One of the key highlights of the training was a comprehensive session led by Mr. Cornelio I A. Gatiera, Agriculturist I, who provided in-depth discussions on the formulation and refinement of Internal Standards tailored to local conditions. He also guided participants through the process of developing a Manual of Operations that serves as a foundational document for implementing these standards effectively.
Additionally, Mr. Johnny H. Pasaquian, Organic Focal Person, delivered an insightful presentation on the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS). His session offered a thorough explanation of the PGS framework.
On the second day, each PGS group presented their respective Manuals of Operation and Internal Standards, showcasing their dedication to aligning with established organic guidelines. These presentations highlighted the groups’ collaborative efforts to ensure consistency, compliance, and continuous improvement in organic certification processes.
The training concluded with closing remarks delivered by Mr. John Lord L. Auman, Information Officer II, who commended the active participation and collaboration among the various PGS group throughout the three-day activity. He also encouraged the participants to sustain the momentum and apply their learnings in their respective communities to build a more robust, inclusive, and sustainable organic agriculture sector. His remarks served as a motivational endnote, reinforcing the Department of Agriculture's continued support for PGS and the broader organic movement in the region.
