Carmen, Cotabato – On April 23, 2025, the third day of the “Training on Coconut Hybridization Protocols: Assisted Pollination Techniques for Hybrid Seed Production – Batch 2” was held at the Philippine Coconut Authority – National Coconut Seed Production Center (PCA-NCSPC), with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning.

The day opened with a motivational message from PCA Region XII Regional Manager Mrs. Emilyn Lorion, who welcomed the participants and encouraged them to maximize the opportunity to enhance their technical skills. Her message set an enthusiastic tone for a full day of practical activities aimed at reinforcing the theories and protocols introduced in earlier sessions.

Participants began the morning by practicing assisted pollination techniques, including emasculation—the careful removal of male flowers—and the precise application of pollen to female flowers to ensure successful hybrid seed production. Guided by seasoned coconut experts, the trainees learned the critical steps and timing necessary for effective hybridization.

In the afternoon, participants shifted their focus to nursery establishment. After a demonstration on proper nut selection for seed production, each group established their own coconut nursery, applying the knowledge they had acquired on seedling care and nursery management. This practical experience is expected to boost the participants’ confidence and capacity to implement hybridization techniques effectively in their local farming communities.
