Following the directive of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos, Jr, who is also the Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary in intensifying the governmentโ€™s efforts towards the implementation of a nationally-coherent food security program which pushes for sustainability in agricultural productivity, and ensuring sufficient supply of food among Filipinos, the Agricultural Training Institute Regional Training Center 2 (ATI-RTC 2) in partnership with other stakeholders conducted a series of Seminar on Urban gardening in different LGUโ€™s in the province of Isabela.

Sanay magkaroon pa ng ganitong pagkakataon o seminar,โ€ said Ms. Evangeline P. Carbonillo one of the participants from Brgy. Ramos East, San Isidro, Isabela.

More than 127 participants attended the five batches of seminar that were conducted on April. A total of 52 Staff and members of Irrigators Association from NIA-MARIIS Head Office participated in the activity last April 11 and 12, 2023 at NIA-MARIIS, Minante I, Cauayan City, Isabela and San Mateo, Isabela. Twenty-five participants from barangays of Victoria, Ramon West, Ramon East, and Gud have also participated last April 24, 2023, at Hacienda Nena Integrated-Diversified Farm, San Isidro, Isabela, while 25 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and Jail Officers participated last April 26, 2023 at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Santiago City District Jail in Brgy. Batal, Santiago City and 25 staff of LGU-Santiago, members of Rural Improvement Club (RIC) and 4Ps of different barangays attended last April 27, 2023, at Minerva Farms, Brgy. Sinsayon, Santiago City, Isabela.

The participants were taught about urban gardening concepts and benefits, types of urban gardens, and natural farming inputs (NFIs). They also had hands-on activities on the preparation of organic concoctions and plant extracts. Each participant also received assorted vegetable seeds, a seedling tray, and poly bag as a starter kit.

Salamat po sa inyo sa pagbisita sa amin upang matuto,โ€ said one of the PDL-participants in BJMP Santiago.

Urban gardening activities offer multiple benefits from boosting local economies and improving the quality of the environment in urban neighborhoods, to engaging, connecting and empowering the most vulnerable groups of people and disfavored youth.
