In response to growing concerns over food security in urban areas, the Agricultural Training Institute–Regional Training Center 02 (ATI-RTC 02), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office II (DA-RFO 02), conducted a specialized training on peri-urban and urban agriculture from May 7 to 9, 2025, at ATI-RTC 2 in Malasin, San Mateo, Isabela.

The initiative was launched under the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (NUPAP), with 25 project beneficiaries endorsed by DA-RFO 02 who attended the activity. The training aimed to empower individuals to grow food in available urban spaces such as backyards, rooftops, and vacant lots—offering a sustainable solution to food insecurity brought on by pest outbreaks, climate-related disasters, rapid population growth, and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants engaged in hands-on learning through lectures, practical exercises, and demonstrations, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge in urban food production. Topics covered included composting and vermicomposting, garden cultural management, production of natural farming inputs, and the basics of raising free-range chickens.

A key goal of the program was to encourage the establishment of FAITH (Food Always In The Home) gardens in participants' households, promoting self-reliance and community resilience. By the end of the training, participants had gained a deeper understanding of sustainable urban farming practices and their potential to generate income, reduce waste, and enhance food availability in city settings.

The DA-RFO 02 emphasized the importance of enabling participants to become local change agents, advocating for sustainability and food security in their communities.
