"ATI-RTC 02 always exceeds my expectations in terms of training. It is relevant at this time because of the change in weather and time. I will disseminate this knowledge to my Co-AEWs for us to join force and to work as a group to serve our farmers’ needs,’’ said Ms. Dea R. Sagario, an AEW from LGU-Reina Mercedes, Isabela during the conduct of the Training on Rice Pest and Disease Surveillance  at the ATI-RTC 02, Malasin, San Mateo, on August 26-30, 2024.

Thirty agricultural extension workers (AEWs) attended the training. They were equipped with the knowledge, and skills and enhanced their capacity in rice pests and disease surveillance, enabling them to effectively identify, monitor, and manage pest and disease outbreaks. Topics discussed include introduction to integrated pest management (IPM), understanding different rice pests, management strategies for rice pest control, surveillance techniques for rice pest detection, and ICT-based decision support tools for pest management and crop management.

The participants also visited the Department of Agriculture - Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-RCPC) in the City of Ilagan, Isabela for Surveillance Techniques for Rice Pest Detection. Pest Management expert Mr. Cenon Malillin taught them  surveillance methods for rice pest detection, data collection and analysis, early detection of asian rice planthoppers. They also had the chance to visit and observe laboratories and biocontrol agents production.

The training aimed to empower AEWs with practical skills to detect early signs of infestations, recommend appropriate control measures, and prevent the widespread of crop damage which is vital in their work.

Ms. Sagario's commitment to disseminating the knowledge gained from the training demonstrates her understanding of the crucial role AEWs play in supporting farmers. By working together as a team, AEWs can leverage their collective expertise to provide comprehensive and timely assistance to farmers, ultimately contributing to the success of rice production in the region.
