The Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center 02 (ATI-RTC 02) conducted a 20-day Training on Advanced Artificial Insemination (AI) and Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) for Large Animals at the Southern Cagayan Research Center- Cagayan  Breeding Station (SCRC-CBS), Solana, Cagayan on July 8 - July 30, 2024. The training was a collaborative effort of the Department of Agriculture - Regional Field Office Number 02 (DA-RFO2) and the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC), with the support of the Local Government Units of Solana and Sto Nino, Cagayan.

The KAMPAI (Kapisanan ng mga Agrikultor na Magpapalakas sa Paghahayupan gamit ang Artificial Insemination) Batch is composed of 18 Agricultural Extension Workers from different Provincial Veterinary Offices (PVET) and Municipal Local Government Units (MLGU) across Cagayan Valley region graduated on July 30, 2024 at the SCRC-CBS.

Cattle and carabao (water buffalo) husbandry contributes to the Philippines' significant ruminant industry. These animals are essential for farmers' supply of milk, meat, and draft power. However, the industry has to deal with challenges like low productivity, insufficient facilities, and constrained access to technology and funding. However, by means of an array of technologies and programs targeted at boosting competitiveness and productivity, efforts are being made to strengthen the industry.

ATI-RTC 02 OIC Center Director Dr. Claris Marayag-Alaska emphasized to the graduates the importance of the application of knowledge and skills they gained from the training. She said, “throughout this comprehensive training program, you have explored the sphere of Artificial Insemination and Pregnancy Diagnosis from its scientific principles to practical application you have now the practical knowledge that you can share with your clients in your respective places. The application of knowledge is very crucial in bringing change to the livestock industry. Kahit tayo ay pa-training nang pa-training kung walang application sa inyong gained skills, nagiging useless po ang ating pa-training,” she said.

Dr. Alaska also acknowledged the tripartite partnership of the ATI-RTC 02, DA RFO 02,  and PCC in the the implementation of the Unified National Artificial Insemination Program. She also thanked the accommodation served by the SCRC led by the Station Manager, Ms. Norma Nerona.

Dr. Gerly Zulueta, Chief of DA Integrated Laboratory Division, who represented Regional Executive Director Rose Mary G. Aquino said on her message, “I congratulate you on the verve and enthusiasm you have shown in the training. Always bear in mind that there is no place for mediocrity in this world. Always do the best. The good, the better, the best. There is no rest, for the good will be better, and the better will be best,” Dr. Zulueta said. Also, present during the graduation program were PCC Piat AI experts Mr. Al G. Bernardino, Mr. Benedicto Blanza, and Mr. Celso G. Qunit, esteemed MAOs, and representatives from LGU Solana.

The training aimed to capacitate and provide advanced technical knowledge and practical skills on the subject. The graduates provided with the knowledge on (1) the basic anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems of large ruminants; (2) animal nutrition; (3) good animal husbandry practices; (4) heat period of a large ruminant; (5) the semen quality used for artificial insemination; (6) recent advances in animal breeding and livestock improvement; (7) process of artificial insemination were discussed and field application was done.

Dr. Jephunneh P. Pascua, from Nagtipunan, Quirino said that he learned a lot on the training. On his impression, Pascua said, “I have learned a lot on this training. Honestly, because of our excitement, we already ordered materials for AI and PD application. We are aiming in our municipality to perform and serve more clients/farmers,” he said.
