Banana processing with participants

Banana is a very popular fruit due to its low price and high nutritive value coupled with ample carbohydrates and vitamins. Whether they are overripe, underripe, or anywhere in between.

Cagayan Valley is one of the top banana-producing regions in the country. Thatโ€™s why the Department of Agriculture is implementing initiatives supportive to the banana industry in the region. These include provision of planting materials, small farm equipment, facilities and trainings in an effort to increase the quantity and improve the quality of the countryโ€™s banana crop.

The latest training conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center 2 (ATI-RTC 2) through its Career Development and Management Services Section (CDMSS) organized the Training of Trainers on Banana-based Farming System. To provide continuous learnings, a total of 21 Agricultural Extension Workers from the different LGUs in the region actively participated the said five-day training.

The training aims to capacitate the participants with knowledge, skills and attitude (KSA) on banana based farming system particularly on crop diversification, Good Agricultural Practices for Banana Production with Post-Harvest Handling and Processing and its requirements for compliance and certification. Lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities were delivered and administered to the participants for them to be able to fully appreciate and understand the gist of the topics.

Participants presented their workshop outputs including market product analysis, labelling and marketing, which were then evaluated by the resource people and training management. The Training of Trainers on Banana-based Farming System took place at ATI-RTC 2 Malasin, San Mateo, Isabela, last August 21โ€“25, 2023.
