REGIONWIDE. Programs for the health care of animals set up reliable surveillance methods to find and track the existence of Avian Influenza (AI) and African Swine Fever (ASF). Prompt containment measures implementation depends on early discovery.

Strict biosecurity protocols are emphasized in animal health management on farms. To stop the introduction and spread of AI and ASF, this entails instituting hygiene measures, limiting access, and putting in place quarantine procedures.

In this regard, the Agricultural Training Institute in Central Visayas implemented a training on Animal Health Care and Management: Enhancing Competency of Municipal Livestock Coordinators to prevent ASF and AI (Batch 2) held at ATI-RTC 7 Training Complex, Cabawan District, Tagbilaran City, Bohol on August 22-24, 2023.

Programs for teaching animal management and health care spread awareness of AI prevention strategies and ASF. Providing education to farmers, veterinary professionals, and other relevant parties promotes awareness, responsible behavior, and prompt reporting of any unexpected symptoms or indicators.

A total of 22 participants composed of 12 Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) and 10 farmers joined the activity.

The training aimed to capacitate AEWs on knowledge and skills in animal health and management.  

“The best experience being part of this training is that we were able to gained more knowledge and insights from this training. The resource persons were very reliable and credible with respect to their professional fields/expertise. This training also serves as linkages to different LGUs from Bohol and Cebu Province. We were able to gained connections and at the same time relationship to share experiences and ideas related to Agriculture,” said Mr. Mark Salatan, Swine Technician of Mandaue City Public Vendors Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MAVENCO).

Moreover, programs for the management and health of animals highlight the possible zoonotic hazards connected to AI and ASF. These initiatives support animal health, which tangentially benefits human health protection.
