From Snout to Tail: Delving into the Essentials of Pig Husbandry

In the Philippines, pig farming contributes significantly to the income of farmers, like the case of processed meat for consumption, it is a vital export good, and generates employment possibilities.

However, pig farmers, particularly backyard farmers, face difficulties like the rising cost of livestock feed.

Also, the detrimental effects of pig farming is very important to address, which include poor waste management that pollutes the environment and poses health risks. African Swine Fever (ASF) is one disease that further impacts pig farming communities, emphasizing the emotional toll that farming takes and the interrelated losses that occur throughout the value chain.

Pig farming continues to play a significant role in the Philippines' agricultural economy despite these obstacles, even though there is a need for sustainable practices and disease management strategies.

With this, the Agricultural Training Institute in Central Visayas capacitated 28 participants from across Negros Oriental on Basic Training Course on Pig Husbandry held on March 25-27, 2024 at the Municipal Agriculture Office, Amlan, this province.

The course aimed for the participants to acquire proficiency in swine production, its management, biosecurity and biosafety.

“Ang akong ikasulti sa tulo ka adlaw nga training, makahatag og idea sa usa ka mag-uuma sa pagbuhi og hayop og ang pag himo ug record aron among usab makat-onan ingon man ang pag desiplena sa angayang buhaton aron mapanalipdan batok sa mga balatia,” expressed Aquilia Y. Egoc, one of the participants.

A crucial component of pig farming, particularly for hog farm owners in the Philippines, is farm biosecurity in swine production. Pig farmers who understand the need of biosecurity, recognized common swine illnesses, and implement efficient preventative measures that will protect their animals, reduce financial losses, and ensure the continued existence of the swine sector. Not only is it morally right to handle animal welfare, but implementing these biosecurity protocols is essential to protecting public health and ensuring the nation's continued access to pork.

Furthermore, the training also made emphasis that ensuring the safety of the animals through proper nutrition is critical to their overall health and wellness.
