ATI trains 17 seed analysts under RCEF program

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna -- The Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) CALABARZON, in partnership with Bureau of Plant Industry-National Seed Quality Control Services (BPI-NSQCS) - Los Baños, concluded the four-day training entitled “Training Course on Seed Testing for Seed Analysts'' held at BPI-Los Baños National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-LBNCRDPSC) from April 16-19, 2024.

Seventeen (17) BPI-NSQCS staff from Regions IV-A, IV-B, and Region V were trained and will actively perform their roles as seed analysts in their areas of assignment.

Spearheaded by the Partnerships and Accreditation Section (PAS) of ATI CALABARZON, the activity aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants on different facets of seed quality control, ensuring that laboratory procedures comply with the standards set by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).

To attain the objectives, practicum sessions and participative lecture discussions were carried out. Topics discussed includes Seed Morphology and Physiology, Concept/Importance of Seed Testing, Seed Sampling and Seed sample preparation Moisture Content Determination, Physical Purity, Germination Test, Biochemical Test for Viability, Introduction to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and Proficiency Testing.

Center Director of ATI CALABARZON Dr. Rolando V. Maningas conveyed a message of support and encouragement to the participants during the training.

Meanwhile, Ms. Clarise M. Lomibao from BPI-NSQCS IV-A shared her experience during the closing program, “Malaking tulong po ang training na ito sa amin dahil po marami kaming natutunan tungkol sa pag-conduct ng mga testing sa mga laboratory tulad ng Sampling & Sample Preparation, Moisture Content Determination, Physical Purity Test at sa Germination Test”.

This training course was accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) wherein participants received 16 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
