ATI-RTC I Enhances to Leverage Potentials of AEWs as Frontliners of AFE Services

To fully prepare the LGUs with full potential in the execution of devolved functions under the E.O. 138, specifically on the delivery of agricultural extension services to the grassroot, the ATI-RTC I conducted four (4) batches of Specialized Refresher Course for Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) in the Ilocos Region. Considering the ladderized approach, these trainings were implemented in two (2) phases dubbed as Training Course on Rice Crop Nutrition (Phase 1) and Training Course on Module Development (Phase 2).

A total of 112 AEWs regionwide completed the trainings through lecture-discussions and series of workshops on various subjects matters to include Crop Nutrition; Soil and its Chemical and Physical Properties; Tools in Assessing Soil Fertility; Organic Mineral Fertilizers; Managing Requirement of the Crop; and Fertilizer Program. In addition, the participants had undergone field work for soil sampling, soil testing, and soil analysis.

In the second phase of the training, the participants were guided on how to develop a module in order to transfer and convey the technologies they have learned in the first phase. Through lectures and thorough workshops on module development, not only were they able to develop a module, but also delivered them during the microteaching activity. The knowledge and skills acquired by the participants will be leverage in achieving a dynamic and sound AFE services in their localities.

Dr. Nenita E. Dela Cruz, retired professor from the Central Luzon State University served as the resource person on rice crop nutrition while Dr. Melinda F. Mangabat, former Assistant Center Director of ATI-RTC I delivered the topics on module development.

The four (4) batches of trainings were conducted at ATI-RTC I, Tebag East, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan and at ATI Satellite Training Center, Batac City, Ilocos Norte on July 12-15 and July 19-22, 2022 (Batch 1); July 26-29 and August 2-5, 2022 (Batch 2); August 23-26 and August 30-September 2, 2022 (Batch 3); and on September 20-23 and September 27-30, 2022 (Batch 4), respectively.

One of the participants, Mr. Joseph Tadeo of OPAg Ilocos Sur expressed that the training is a great avenue of theoretical and hands-on application of new knowledge and skills in module development, soil science, and rice crop nutrition which is significant in developing their competencies and be ready of the challenges in agricultural extension. He added that the training was very useful for them who are ‘next in line’ in continuing the legacy of developing competent farmers and fellow AEWs.

As part of the professional development support to the AEWs, the training are accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission – Continuing Professional Development Accreditation System (PRC-CPDAS) with 16 Units.
