Boosting Banana Industry through Enhancing Capabilities of AEWs on Good Agricultural Practices

Banana is regarded as one of the most important horticultural commodities in the country, serving as both a top export and a source of revenue. However, the country was hampered in accessing the global market due to restrictions on the exportation of products including good agricultural practices certification of commodities, and other agricultural products.

To support the banana industry in the country, particularly the banana farmers, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center I (ATI-RTC I) conducted the Training of Trainers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Banana Production on May 8-12, 2023 at ATI-RTC I, Tebag East, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan.

Twenty-seven (27) Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) and farmer-leaders had undergone the five day training and learned both technical and functional competencies in banana production. It is anticipated that through this training, the AEWs will help update the agricultural practices of banana farmers and other stakeholders.

A mock inspection was conducted at Floram Ville Farm and DPP Cacao Farm in Alcala, Pangasinan to actualize the knowledge and skills learned by the participants from lecture discussions. Acted and served as GAP Inspectors, the participants observed and evaluated farm practices focused on conformities, hazards, and risks based on the Code of GAP or the Philippine National Standards for Banana. The findings of the inspection were subsequently reviewed and discussed with the farm owners, along with recommendations for enhancing farm practices that do not comply with the standards.

The participants prepared a strategic action plan aimed at assisting banana producers in their respective municipalities to achieve safe and high-quality agricultural products. The comprehensive five-day training program received accreditation from the Philippine Regulatory Commission for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), entitling participants to earn six (6) CPD points.
