Aligned to the Food Security Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) through its Regional Training Centers intensifies the implementation of extension initiatives, such as the establishment of community urban gardens and nurseries, and the provision of training and starter kits for home gardening to urban communities and schools.

Taking inspiration from the said program, the ATI – Regional Training Center I conducted a Training Course on Urban Agriculture: A Capacity Building towards Food Security on November 22-24, 2022 at ATI-RTC I, Tebag East, Santa Barbara, Pangasinan. The three-day training was participated by 30 teachers, parents, and farmers from the selected school beneficiaries for the establishment of an urban agriculture garden.

The training equipped the participants with knowledge, skills, and attitude on urban agriculture for the quality production of vegetables. The training highlights lecture discussions on the steps of establishing a vegetable garden or edible landscaping; and the modern and practical techniques in urban gardening such as aquaponics, hydroponics, organic concoctions, and vermicomposting. Moreover, the participants had their hands-on demonstration on seed sowing and the production of organic concoctions.

It is expected that the trained participants will re-echo their learning to their co-teachers in-charge in the management and sustainability of the vegetable garden established from the support provided by ATI-RTC I.
