The Agricultural Training Institute โ Regional Training Center I and the City Government Unit of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, jointly inaugurated the Swine Multiplier and Technology Demonstration Farm (SMTDF) Project on February 16, 2024, at Brgy. Cabaroan Daya, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by City Mayor Hon. Jose "Bonito" C. Singson Jr., who expressed unwavering commitment to the continuous operation of the project and support for agricultural endeavors. Also in attendance were Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member, Janina Caren Medina Farinas, representing the Office of the Vice Mayor; Mr. Tirso Savellano and Mr. Fortunato Ines, from the Office of the DA-Undersecretary for Livestock; Honorable Christopher Baterina, Provincial Board Member of Ilocos Sur; Engr. Margarita S. Crizaldo from ATI-ITCPH; and Dr. Josephine K. Aben from ATI-RTC 1, all of whom delivered their messages of support.
The established facility is equipped with a tunnel-ventilated enclosure, renowned for providing an optimal air-conditioned environment for the swine inhabitants. Within this facility, there are also 30 high-quality breed sows, aimed at raising the standards of swine breeding in the province of Ilocos Sur and in the region, as a whole.

This initiative is under the National Livestock Program (NLP), which seeks to enhance the genetic composition of productive gilts/sows and ensure the provision of safe pork. It serves as a pivotal platform for training and extension activities for farmers and individuals keen on swine husbandry. Ultimately, the project aims to bolster the swine-based livelihood programs of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other government agencies by generating ample quantities of high-quality stock and supplies.

The City Government of Vigan is one of the two beneficiaries of the SMTDF project in the province of Ilocos Sur, alongside Candon City, which is also slated for inauguration later this year.
