The development of coconut-based enterprise is one of the strategies under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) to help improve the productivity and economic status of coconut farmers and their families. To realize this strategy, a continued capacity building support on the production of  coconut products and by-products is being catered by the Agricultural Training Institute - Regional Training Center I (ATI-RTC I) to coconut farmer organizations in the Region. Recently, the Center, in collaboration with the Philippine Coconut Authority - North Luzon (PCA North Luzon), conducted the Training on Basic Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), Coconut Flour Processing, and Coconut By-Product Production and Utilization for the Del Mar Shellcraft Multi-Purpose Coopertive (MPC) on April 21-25, 2025, at IMA Integrated Farm, Barangay Caparispisan, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

A total of 26 members of the cooperative completed the five-day  training, prepared to explore opportunities through innovative coconut product development. Diverse learning methods such as interactive discussions, demonstrations and return demonstrations on basic VCO, coconut flour, nata de coco and coco coir production were employed by the resource speakers, Mr. Alexander Disu and Ms. Noemi Disu, owners of Greentop Organix Farm, to engage and optimize learning of the participants.

The training program is to further prepare the cooperative in the operation and management of the coconut shared processing facility (SPF), particularly for VCO and coconut flour, which is scheduled to be formally turned over in June 2025 by the PhilMech.

At the end of the training, the participants prepared their action plans as a blueprint of their commitment to the production of coconut by-products in their locality, providing an additional source of income for their cooperative.
