The outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) had a crucial impact on the global pork industry, leading to substantial losses in pig populations and disrupting meat supply chains. As a result, there is a growing need to explore alternative meat sources that can meet the protein demands of consumers. Rabbit meat emerges as a promising option due to its nutritional value, sustainable production practices, and potential to fill the gap created by ASF.

Recognizing the significance of training Agricultural Extension Workers to drive advancements in rabbit production, the Agricultural Training Institute in Ilocos Region conducted Training of Trainers on Rabbit Production held on June 26-30, 2023 at Reotutar's Institute of Science, Arts and Trades Inc., Lipay, Villasis, Pangasinan. This training tailored for rabbit production engaged a vital role in transferring essential expertise and empowering farmers to optimize their production systems.

The training has emphasized the importance of practical training and hands-on demonstrations, producing thirty (30) trainers equipped with knowledge, skills, and attitude on how to engage farmers and reinforce them with theoretical knowledge through real-world applications.

ATI acknowledges the significance of equipping trainers with business acumen to support rabbit farmers in the marketplace. AEWs learned about economic analysis techniques, cost management, marketing strategies, and value chain development from Mr. Engelbert Soliven, Focal. Marketing and Partnership of RISATI. The participants also delve into essential rabbit husbandry and management, optimal housing design, feeding practices, health management, breeding techniques, and record-keeping guided by Mr. Artemio C. Veneracion, Jr., President of Association of Rabbit of Rabbit Meat Producers Inc. Moreover, Dr. Arceli Robeñol, OIC Provincial Veterinarian of Pangasinan, enlightened the participant on effective disease prevention and control using Ethno-Veterinary Medicine. They also undergo comprehensive discussion and activities on identifying common rabbit diseases, implementing biosecurity measures, and administering appropriate treatments.

The concluded Training-of-Trainers has been instrumental in building a skilled workforce that can drive the success and growth of the rabbit farming industry. With well-trained AEWs at the forefront, the industry is poised for continued advancements, ensuring a brighter future for rabbit producers and a sustainable source of protein for consumers.

As these trained AEWs enter the field and disseminate their knowledge, the impact will extend far beyond the training program itself. Rabbit farmers will benefit from improved productivity, enhanced disease management strategies, and greater economic opportunities. The ripple effect of this training program will contribute to the overall development of the rabbit production sector, promoting its sustainability, profitability, and market potential.

ATI's commitment to this training is a testament to the organization's dedication to sustainable agriculture and food security. By investing in the development of skilled trainers, it has laid the foundation for the widespread adoption of best practices in rabbit farming, ultimately benefiting both farmers and consumers.
