TOT on PGS in Romblon

The ATI-RTC MIMAROPA conducted a 10-day Training of Trainers on Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) for Identified PGS Group in Romblon.

The 10-day training enables the participants to learn and review the Philippine National Standards relevant to Organic Agriculture. Moreover, they gained an in-depth understanding of PGS processes, from certification to peer review, fostering trust in locally produced goods. The TOT was done in a blended approach wherein it consisted of five days of online lectures and discussion of topics via GoogleMeet on July 31 to August 4, 2023 while the remaining five days were face-to-face sessions held at Simple Living Hotel, Odiongan, Romblon on August 7 – 11, 2023.

During the face-to-face session, participants drafted their manual of operation and internal standards, which were done collaboratively. This documented management system is vital to operate the PGS in their locality. They also presented the said documents for comments and suggestions for improvement.

In addition, the training's modules equipped them with the tools to facilitate PGS processes effectively. Particularly enlightening to them was the peer review simulation, wherein participants assumed the role of inspectors during a farm visit at Lanuton Farm, San Andres, Romblon.  This hands-on experience demonstrated the major role of PGS in ensuring the quality assurance of organic products within the community.

According to the participants, the training was very relevant to them and this might be the starting point for the Province of Romblon to have an accredited certifying body that could assist organic practitioners in certifying their produce and which could develop further, promote, and propagate the organic agriculture in the province.

After the training, these farmers are prepared to embark on the next step toward certification.
