PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, PALAWAN - To equip Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) and farmers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively implement sustainable bamboo production techniques in the context of climate change resilience, the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in MIMAROPA conducted the “Training on Climate Change: Bamboo Production Technology” on April 22-24, 2024 at Ala Amid Bed and Breakfast in Barangay San Manuel.
Center Director Pat Andrew B. Barrientos of ATI MIMAROPA, together with Supervising Aquaculturist and Head of Fisheries Division Ms. Pacita P. Bravo, offered their full support by gracing the opening program of the three-day training.
In the training, participants understood the concepts of climate change and its implications for agriculture. They also learned about bamboo production technology, covering propagation, plantation establishment, maintenance, and harvesting techniques, as well as its role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Moreover, the participants engaged in hands-on activities such as selecting planting materials suitable for bamboo species, preparing soil mediums for bamboo propagules, and learning about the ecological benefits of bamboo.
Ms. Jonabelle C. Ocreto, an AEW from LGU-Brooke's Point, expressed gratitude for the learnings gained during the training. In her impression, she encouraged all the graduates to engage in bamboo production and to share what they have learned with other farmers, especially now that they are facing the effects of climate change.
Attended by 27 participants, composed of 23 AEWs and four farmers, the said training was facilitated by the Administrative and Finance Unit led by Mr. Christian Albert R. Sarabia, OIC-Admin Officer IV/Climate Change Point Person.
