DEL GALLEGO, Camarines Sur – The Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) Bicol, through its National Corn Program, conducted a three-day training on cassava production and postharvest technology for the second batch of Learning Sites for Agriculture (LSAs) on April 23–25, 2025, at Nette’s Agricultural Farm in Barangay Pinagdapian.

The training aimed to enhance the technical know-how of LSAs and farmer-leaders across the Bicol Region who are actively engaged in cassava farming under the PAITAAS: TOP555 Program of DA-ATI Bicol and the Bicol Learning Sites for Agriculture (BLSA, Inc.). A total of 31 participants completed the course.

The opening program featured welcoming remarks from Municipal Agriculturist Engr. Alex B. Idanan, who recognized ATI’s continued support for farmer education and rural income generation. ATI Bicol Center Director Elsa A. Parot delivered an inspirational message, highlighting the success story of Nette’s Agri Farm as an emerging learning site. Engr. Gay Hidalgo-Pabines also shared practical farming insights, followed by a training overview from Alexander O. Vargas, ATI Bicol Training Specialist I and LSA Focal Person.

On the first day, Edgardo C. Nacario, former ATI Bicol Agriculturist II, discussed cassava production technologies, including land preparation, planting materials, fertilization, and pest management. Participants then applied their learnings in a field practicum in the afternoon.

On day two, Ms. Jenelyn C. Estacio, Farm Manager of Viani Farm and Resort, led a session on cassava processing and value-adding. She emphasized proper hygiene and sanitation in food processing and introduced cassava as a raw material for various products. A hands-on cooking demonstration in the afternoon allowed participants to process and prepare cassava-based foods.

Ms. Angelica M. Lomenario, Business Counselor of the Department of Trade and Industry-Negosyo Center Raga,  facilitated the final module on day three, covering product packaging, marketing strategies, and cost-price calculations. The event concluded with a closing program, awarding of certificates, and a message from Jomarie Leo Florece, Executive Director of BLSA, who encouraged the participants to apply their newly acquired skills in their communities.

Participants submitted 11 re-entry plans, which ATI Bicol will monitor six months after the training to ensure the dissemination of knowledge to fellow LSAs and farmers.

Participants expressed strong appreciation for the hands-on approach and practical value of the sessions. Feedback for the resource persons was positive.
