PILI, Camarines Sur — In a strong push to modernize cassava farming in the region, the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute Regional Training Center V (DA-ATI Bicol) successfully conducted a three-day training on Site-Specific Nutrient Management (SSNM) and the use of Nutrient Expert® for Cassava. The activity, held from May 20 to 22 at Isarog Hall in Pili, Camarines Sur, was part of the PAITAAS: Top 555 Program and gathered Learning Sites for Agriculture (LSAs) and their assisted farmer-leaders who are actively engaged in cassava production.
The event opened with a ceremonial program led by Ms. Icel A. Adornado, followed by a welcoming message from Center Director Elsa Parot. In her address, CD Parot expressed appreciation for the farmers’ dedication to continuous learning and reaffirmed the Center’s support for their growth, particularly under the PAITAAS initiative.
Mr. Alexander Vargas, the project officer, laid the foundation for the training with a comprehensive overview. He emphasized the importance of customizing fertilizer use based on the unique conditions of each farm—a core principle of SSNM. Using farm maps and interactive tools like Mentimeter, he guided participants through expectation-setting activities and a pre-assessment to measure baseline knowledge.
The training featured a blend of technical sessions, group activities, and hands-on learning. Engr. Debbie Pante from the DA Corn and Cassava Program highlighted the country’s low cassava productivity compared to neighboring nations and emphasized the importance of adopting science-based farming techniques in Bicol. Mr. Edgardo Nacario expanded on this by introducing SSNM concepts, explaining how efficient fertilizer use not only boosts yield but also protects long-term soil health.
The second day delved deeper into practical applications. Mr. Nacario covered proper cassava planting methods and pest and disease management, sparking lively discussions as farmers shared real-life challenges and solutions. In the afternoon, Mr. John Carlo Rivero introduced the Nutrient Expert® for Cassava—a digital decision-support tool designed to help farmers determine the optimal type and amount of fertilizer for their specific conditions. For many, this was their first exposure to digital agricultural technology, and the response was enthusiastic.
By the third day, participants were allowed to use the Nutrient Expert® app themselves. Guided by Mr. Rivero, they installed the tool on their smartphones and laptops, navigating its features with growing confidence. Initial anxieties quickly gave way to excitement as farmers realized how the tool could reduce guesswork and enhance their productivity.
The training concluded with a post-test, evaluation, and the crafting of 13 re-entry plans—actionable commitments from participants to apply and share their learnings within their communities. Many expressed intent to replicate the training locally or apply the Nutrient Expert® tool directly to their fields.
A video synthesis and participant reflection followed, leading to the awarding of certificates. In her closing remarks, CD Parot inspired the group by saying, “Cash-Aba sa Cassava is not just a slogan—it’s a real possibility. With the right attitude and consistent effort, you can turn knowledge into success.”
The training concluded on a high note, with a 100% passing rate on the post-test and overwhelmingly positive feedback. More than just a learning event, the training became a platform for empowerment, proving that with the right tools, support, and mindset, Filipino cassava farmers can grow not only more, but also smarter.
