DA-ATI Bicol Hosts National Training on Coconut GAP

PILI, Camarines Sur – The Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute in Region V (ATI Bicol) hosted the National Training of Trainers (TOT) on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Coconut spearheaded by the Agricultural Training Institute-Central Office (ATI-CO). This took place on November 7-11, 2022 at the ATI Bicol Compound in Pili, Camarines Sur as well as various coconut farms and processing centers.

An intervention under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), the activity answers the need to ensure food safety and quality of coconut-based products and by-products, as well as environmental protection and workers' health, safety, and welfare.

In her welcome remarks, ATI Bicol Center Director Elsa Parot expressed her delight. “We are more than honored to be selected as host (of the training).”

Meanwhile, Regional Manager Mateo Zipagan of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) exhorted the participants, “After the training, you share. ‘Yun lang hinihingi namin. Just the smile of the people we work with, enough na ‘yun. Walang kasing sarap ang pasasalamat ng coconut farmers.”

In a recorded video message, ATI Director Remelyn Recoter stressed the commitment of the Institute to capacitate the coconut industry stakeholders through TOT. “Those who will complete the course will be able to pay it forward.”

Participants in the National TOT comprised ATI and PCA trainers in various regions. They shall conduct regional-level training to equip the CFIDP implementing agencies, as well as farmer-leaders and Agricultural Extension Workers of Local Government Units.

Key officials of PCA Central and Regional Offices, as well as of the Bureau of Plant Industry, served as Resource Persons.

The TOT graduates shall comprise the new pool of trainers equipped with the proper knowledge and skills on GAP. They shall share information effectively and lead activities that will reinforce the training. They shall coach and mentor trainers who are less experienced in delivering topics on GAP.
