PILI, Camarines Sur- The Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center V, in collaboration with the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), conducted a Training on Seed Production, Processing and Storage for Community Seed Banks. It was held last January 19-20, 2023, at the Isarog Hall, ATI Bicol Dormitory, San Agustin, Pili, Camarines Sur. Forty Learning Sites for Agriculture (LSA) cooperators participated in the training.
During the opening program, DA-ATI Bicol Center Director Elsa A. Parot shared her message and thanked everyone for their continuous support and enthusiasm for the agricultural improvement in the Bicol Region. She emphasized that LSAs are the jewels of community development.
ATI Bicol Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit Chief Mr. Emmanuel L. Orogo, who also serves as the Project Officer, presented the training overview. Mr. Orogo also serves as the point person of the center's High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP).
UPLB University Researchers Florita Carandang, Jennelyn Bengoa, Hidelisa de Chavez and Raol P. Pamiloza served as resource persons.
Ms. Carandang discussed seed production; Ms. Jennelyn C. Bengoa seed processing and storage; Mr. Pamiloza insect management; and Ms. de Chavez discussed community seed banking.
On the second training day, the participants performed seed extraction and processing, seed drying, moisture content determination, and identification of seed contaminants and rejects.
