The Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center in the Cordillera Administrative Region (ATI-RTC-CAR) wrapped up its celebration of the 10th National Organic Agriculture (OA) Month in November 2024 with a series of engaging and impactful activities aimed at promoting organic farming and sustainability.
Spearheaded by OA Focal Person Mr. Edwin C. Dicksen, the celebration started with a unique “Takbong OAmazing,” a combination of an Amazing Race and a Fun Run. The Amazing Race took participants through the scenic Japanese Trail in Longlong, Puguis, La Trinidad, where they completed various OA-related challenges. Meanwhile, the Fun Run, held at the Track and Field Oval in Wangal, La Trinidad, saw participants covering 400m and 800m distances.
The festivities also included an OA Quiz Bee, where ATI-CAR staff competed at the Centers’ Aspulan Hall to test their knowledge of organic agriculture. The quiz enhanced participants’ understanding of sustainable farming practices, the benefits of organic produce, and the role of organic farming in food security.
As part of its outreach efforts, the Barangay Organic Outreach Project was implemented in Abra, benefiting Baay National High School and Alfredo D. Bersamina National High School. These schools, which offer agriculture-related subjects, hosted lectures on organic agriculture technologies and practices for senior high school students. Farm inputs such as compost, seeds, seedling trays, hydroponic kits, trowels, and watering cans were also distributed, in celebration of both OA Month and National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM).
Additionally, the staff participated in the Search for Best Home Garden 2024, showcasing their efforts in creating productive and sustainable gardens. The winners were recognized with prizes including compost, bush hats, long-sleeved shirts, and certificates.
To further amplify the celebration, promotional videos, and OA trivia were shared on its social media platforms throughout the month, spreading awareness of organic agriculture's importance in achieving sustainable food systems.
With its month-long celebration, the Center successfully fostered a greater appreciation for organic agriculture, bringing stakeholders together to advocate for sustainable farming practices. The activities concluded on a high note, with the hope of keeping every stakeholder inspired to continue supporting organic agriculture initiatives in the region.//Glory T.
