The Agricultural Training Institute - Regional Training Center - Cordillera Administrative Region (ATI-RTC-CAR) concluded its season-long Farmers’s Field School (FFS), recognizing the invaluable participation of 405 corn farmers from 15 sites across Ifugao and Mt. Province.
The Farmers Field School on Corn Production and Management aimed to promote sustainable farming practices through experiential learning enabling farmers to adapt to evolving agricultural landscapes. This employed a combined theoretical knowledge with practical on-field applications for the farmers to gain exposure to innovative and applicable technologies strengthening their decision-making, creativity and critical-thinking skills.
A crucial component of the FFS was the capacity-building of the Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) and Farmer Leaders through a Training of Trainers (TOT) on Corn Production and Management facilitated by the Center early this year. These trained personnel served as the main facilitators in their respective areas. The Local Government Unit shared their resources contributing to the success of the program.
Training Center Director Charlie C. Sagudan highlighted the vital role of farmers in the economy as well as in achieving food sustainability and security. "Knowledge is not confined to the four walls of a classroom. You are now corn experts, and this is a tool for advancing your organizations and the corn industry. The legacy you are building today will be passed on to your children and future generations." Sagudan said.
FFS Graduates shared heartfelt reflections on their learning experiences:
"Farming is much like raising a family-we need to nurture and cherish it. We truly appreciate your support to us farmers; this program has made a meaningful impact on our lives. " Mr. Alberto A. Uyami, farmer from Lamut, Ifugao.
"It's true that learning knows no age. I’ve been in the (corn) industry for 20 years, yet I was amazed to still learn new techniques that are essential to our farming. These technologies will surely improve our corn production. We should truly treasure this opportunity. .” Ms. Isabel Dontogan, farmer from Paracelis, Mt. Province.
"As one of the youngest participants, I believe that we, the youth, play a crucial role in farming, as we are the ones who will carry on this legacy. This training has been instrumental in helping us contribute to food safety and security. ." Mr. Marcial Baguilat, farmer from Mayoyao, Ifugao.
This FFS initiative not only aims to improve individual farmer’s productivity but also contributes to the country’s goal of food security, making it an essential endeavor for the region’s agricultural development.
This graduation ceremony of all the FFS sites was attended by the ATI-RTC-CAR team headed by Mr. Charlie C. Sagudan, Training Center Director, Ms. Vicky May Guinayen, Corn Focal Person, Mr. Aldrin Sagao, Technical Support Staff as well as the Local Government Unit representatives.// Aldrin Sagao, Technical Support Staff.
