Deliciously and Healthfully RabBit: Livestock Focal Persons Train on Rabbit Production

The outbreak of ASF and bird flu have severely affected the swine and poultry industries which in turn caused the rabbit industry to bloom aggressively and gain grounds not just as pets but as food. In view of this, a training on Rabbit Production and Enterprise Development for AEWs of CAR was conducted on June 19-23, 2023 with 16 AEWs participants.

The training activity aimed that after the training the participants shall be able to discuss the basic principles of rabbit production and display skills in rabbit slaughtering and cooking.

Participants are AEWs specifically the livestock coordinators/report officers, and technicians from the regional, provincial and municipal levels of CAR.

Topics were on Rabbit Production particularly Opportunities and Drawbacks of Rabbit Raising; Breeds of Rabbits; Stocks Management covering Housing Requirements, Feeds and Feeding, and Breeding; Health Care Practices; Rabbit Slaughtering and Dressing; Rabbit Dishes; and Taxidermy and Marketing Strategies.

Expert from the Climate Smart Agriculture Center of the Benguet State University did a straightforward lecture demonstration on rabbit slaughtering and dressing. Participants applied their knowledge and skills shared with them and were able to do the slaughtering and dressing satisfactorily during the return demonstration. Dishes  were also prepared such as adobong rabbit, kalderetang rabbit, bola-bola, and lumpiang shanghai rabbit.

To be more engaging, the participants were exposed to a rabbitry farm in Tuba, Benguet and at the Lily of the Valley Organic Farm at Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet. A question-and-answer methodology was done during the field visit.
