Enhancing Productivity through Innovative Rice Farming Techniques: AEWs Undergoes Rice-based Farming Systems

Tue, 04/02/2024 - 09:29

Sustainable rice-based farming systems are essential for ensuring food security, environmental preservation, and socio-economic stability in various global regions. Central to this objective is training programs that focus on sustainable rice farming, equipping farmers, agricultural extension workers, and stakeholders with the essential knowledge and skills. These programs enable the adoption and implementation of practices that optimize productivity while reducing environmental impact. With this scenario at hand, the Regional Training Center of the Agricultural Training Institute in Cordillera Administrative Region is currently conducting “Training on Sustainable Rice-based Farming Systems” with 34 AEWs from all over the region.

Among the topics to be discussed were rice cultivation with an emphasis on environmental challenges such as water usage, soil degradation, chemical inputs, and greenhouse gas emissions. To counter these effects, practices like the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), integrated pest management, organic farming methods, and water-efficient techniques will also be discussed. In addition, innovative techniques such as diversification, agroforestry, crop rotation, and improved rice varieties will also be taught to the participants for them to be equipped with knowledge on productivity and resilience against climate change.

The training is currently being held at the Aspulan Hall, ATI-RTC-CAR, BSU Compd., La Trinidad, Benguet. The training runs from April 1-5, 2024.
