To be qualified for certification as a GAP rice farm, 59 participants successfully finished the “Training on Philippine Good Agricultural Practices (PhilGAP) Standards and Certification for RiceBIS Farmers” at Namillangan, Alfonso Lista, Ifugao on February 26-28, 2024.

Resource Persons from ATI–RTC II, FPA–CAR, Ifugao PAENRO, and DA RFO CAR shared their expertise on farm entrepreneurship, proper use and disposal of pesticides and fertilizers, pest and disease management, and the Philippine GAP Standards (PhilGAP). A practicum on field inspection was done for the participants to feel the real inspections of their rice fields.

During the closing program, Mr. Gregorio Lumabas thanked the ATI-RTC-CAR for implementing the training and that he was able to attend the said training activity. He pointed out that in the PhilGAP proper segregation of waste is a must. There are ways that we can do to separate those that are biodegradable from those that are hardly degradable. This is to help in the preservation of our environment and also to our health. Ms. Jovelyn A. Pilien acknowledged that the training offered a helpful tip to add income not only on planting rice but also on planting vegetables and raising livestock to maximize the space of our rice field.

Participants were encouraged to apply for PhilGAP certification to enhance the marketability and value proposition of their rice products. By obtaining PhilGAP certification, participants can differentiate their rice products in the market based on their quality. This certification also opens doors to premium pricing opportunities and access to high-end markets, where consumers are willing to pay a premium for products with certified quality assurances.
