ATI-Cordillera Enhances Expertise of Seed Inspectors

To renew knowledge and skills of the deputized and designated seed inspectors of Kalinga and Ifugao, a periodic refresher course training on inbred rice seed production was conducted. The learning course enabled them gain insights on the latest methodologies, innovations, and quality control measures pertinent to inbred seed production.

Mr. Fidel Ramos a Senior Science Research Specialists of DA-PhilRice-Isabela discussed the cultural management practices on inbred rice seed production. The highlights of his discussion enabled participants to renew their knowledge and skills to prepare land effectively, employing techniques that optimize soil conditions for rice cultivation. With a focus on sustainable practices, they are trained to establish crops using recommended techniques that promote healthy growth and development.

Also, Ms. Jennifer Cudal the Regional Seed Inspector of DA-RFO-CAR reviewed seed inspectors on their roles and responsibilities. She reiterated that as seed inspectors they should uphold integrity in conducting inspections and in leading seed growers in handling and producing the best seed at their respective locality.

โ€œIn conducting inspections to the different farms of our seed growers always see to it that all of the remarks and observation are pursuant to Republic Act 7308 or the Seed Industry Development Act of 1992 and its Implementing Rules and Regulations to avoid problems and challengesโ€ remarked Ms. Jena De Guzman the Satellite Chief of BPI-NSQCS-Tabuk City, as she discussed the Policies and Guidelines on Seed Testing and Certification for Inbred Rice Production.

Participants of the training was also exposed to the different rice laboratories of PhilRice, where they had the opportunity to gain practical insights in seed testing, analysis, and research. Apart from laboratory visit, they had the opportunity to benchmark and have a knowledge and insight sharing with one of the successful seed growers and a certified learning site for agriculture of ATI-RTC III, Mr. Fidel C. Patricio.

By enhancing the expertise of seed inspectors in inbred seed production, they can augment their ability to detect irregularities, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and provide valuable guidance to farmers and seed producers. With this learning course, participants are expected demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of inbred seed production techniques, quality control measures, and regulatory standards, enabling them to effectively assess and monitor seed production processes in the field.

Said training was conducted last April 23-25, 2024, at ATI-RTC-CAR and Region III.
