BORONGAN CITY, E. Samar - This year's celebration of National Nutrition Month, observed every July, aims to create greater awareness among Filipinos about the importance of nutrition. It also aligns with Republic Act 9257 (The Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003) and Republic Act 9994 (Expanded Senior Citizen Act of 2010).

In line with this, the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center 8 conducted the Training on Culinary Medicine for Senior Citizens in Borongan City, Eastern Samar from July 29-31, 2024.

The role of senior citizens in nation-building, their benefits, and privileges were emphasized by the resource person, Ms. Verina P. Amoyo, the City Social Welfare & Development Officer of (CSWD) - Borongan.

The activity and discussion on Basic Culinary Medicine and Cooking and Processing with Culinary Herbs and Spices (Demonstration & Hands-on) were led by Ms. Merigine C. Otara,  Planning Officer I of ATI Central Visayas, and Ms. Ma. Reina P. Perez, owner of Gazebo de LOONdon EcoFarm in Loon, Bohol. The session included the preparation of various dishes such as tea/juices, salad, sandwiches, pasta, and main dishes, all incorporating culinary herbs and spices.

“We really enjoyed the activity and I learned a lot that I can share with my family members. The food is really delicious despite the taste and texture being new to me and I appreciate the plant-based food as healthy ingredients”, said Ms.Cynthia Ganaba, one of the participants.

Twenty (20) senior citizens from Borongan City participated in the training, facilitated by the ATI-RTC 8 Gender and Development (GAD) Team, Ms. Mary Jane Pepe and Ms. Vanissa L. Asis.
