KANANGA, LEYTE— The ATI EAsY Agri scholarship allows children of smallholder farmers and fishers to pursue degree programs in agriculture and related fields. As ATI scholars, they are also provided with practical learning opportunities to hone their skill sets.
Scholars gathered in a two-day activity that aimed to deepen their understanding of the Philippine rice industry, expose them to modern agricultural technologies, and provide hands-on training in rice farm operations. They explored key concepts such as the Palayamanan Plus system and the innovative Rice-Duck-Kuhol (RiDuKu) technology developed by Juanito Eco Farm School for Practical Agriculture (JEFSPA). They were also introduced to the operation of rice farm machinery, including a walk-behind rice transplanter, a 4-wheel tractor, and a combine harvester, which they operated for the first time.
One of the highlights was the sharing sessions by Mr. Olegario Paredes Jr., who discussed his JEFSPA farm experience, and Mr. Jimboy Montecillo, an ATI Alumni scholar, who inspired participants with his agri-venture journey. Participants expressed their amazement at seeing the RiDuKu system in action and appreciated the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting.
Ms. Mary Ann G. Cinco, a Batch 2 scholar from Northwest Samar State University - San Jorge Campus, described the experience as transformative. “This activity has been a whirlwind of sweat and learning! Operating agricultural machines and working on the farm has given me a deep appreciation for agriculture. I’m so thankful for this unforgettable experience,” she said.
Similarly, Mr. Renylou B. Gaputan of Batch 3, Visayas State University-Main Campus, called the engagement a highlight of her year. “Living on the farm and learning from hands-on experiences taught me that challenges are growth opportunities. Operating farm machinery was overwhelming yet fulfilling,” she remarked.
Ms. Kheryne C. Ihada, also from Batch 3, VSU-Main Campus, noted how the training broadened her perspective on sustainable agriculture. “From the Palayamanan Plus system to the RiDuKu technology, the training was engaging and empowering. Operating the 4-wheel tractor was intimidating at first, but it gave me a sense of accomplishment,” she said.
The Agri-COOLture Engagement of EAsY Agri Scholars successfully bridged classroom learning and field application, leaving participants inspired and better equipped to contribute to the agricultural sector.
Twenty-three EAsY Agri Scholars actively participated in the Agri-COOLture Engagement on December 14-15, 2024 at JEFSPA Farm, Kananga, Leyte.
