BAYBAY CITY, Leyte - In line with the Memorandum Circular No. 06, Series of 2023, signed on February 6, 2023, which set the Guidelines of Rabbit Raising in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas for the NUPAP BAI Projects, ATI-RTC 8 through its Livestock program, conducted a training on rabbitry for its clients.

Rabbit raising for meat is an identified project implemented through the Bureau of Animal Industry (NUPAP), which aims to provide a supplementary source of income, especially for farmers or households in urban and peri-urban areas.

The training focused on the best management practices in raising rabbits. Participants gained the fundamental knowledge and basic requirements in domesticating rabbits as a source of protein and raw materials for vermicast production, demonstrated proper handling of rabbits, pest and disease management, and demonstrated drug administration.

During the benchmarking at CCF Integrated Farm, the participants also observed the process of performing hygienic slaughtering practices and butchering of rabbit meat. Consequently, disease management and return on investment were also discussed.

Mr. Karl Raven Martin is thankful for the opportunity to learn more about rabbit farming. “I have learned a lot of things about rabbits, the do’s, and don’ts. Honestly, at first, I was not really interested in agriculture or farming since my perspective on farmers is not that very interesting because, as observed in our place, in general, I see them as not really financially stable. Now, I didn’t think that farming would actually generate a lot of money. There are potential and opportunities in agriculture, and the good thing is we are helping our fellow man by producing food. Thank you to our resource person and to our learning site cooperator, who are advising us and sharing their personal experiences.”

A total of 27 farmer leaders, LSA cooperators, and Organic Agriculture scholars completed the Training on Rabbitry Production and Management on July 1-3, 2024 at ATI-RTC 8, VSU Campus, Baybay City, Leyte.
