Borongan City, E. Samar - The geographic information system (GIS) is a technology that can spell the difference in addressing concerns in agriculture. In fact, the incidence of the African Swine Fever has prompted the use of the (ASF) ASF Quantum Geographic Information System (ASF QGIS) which focuses on map lay-outing and data encoding that generates ASF geographic color-coded information map. These maps will assist in the control and monitoring of ASF from infected to non-infected areas, protecting pockets of smallholder and commercial swine farms in each barangay of the municipality.

ATI RTC 8 conducted Batch 7 of the ASF Quantum Geographic Information System Workshop. It aims to implement the ASF Quantum Geographic Information System in cities and municipalities of Eastern Visayas. Nineteen (19) participants were tasked to describe quantum geographic information systems, interpret basic maps, explain map lay-outing and define density maps, demonstrate data encoding, and perform the mapping. Although the training focused on ASF mapping, GIS is also applicable to other commodities which will aid the LGU in geo-tagging the location of every farm from the data of farm inventories.

Livestock inventory data provided by the Provincial Veterinary Office of Northern Samar were used for the workshop. They were required by the resource person to use the data in mapping and make a graphical/chart presentation to visualize the livestock population per municipality of Northern Samar Province.

Mark Anthony Diaz, a participant from Lawaan, Eastern Samar was very thankful to have joined the training.  He shared, “Ha amon Resource Person nga expert talaga hiya. Gindi- detalye gud niya an lecture kay para masayon la pag intende han mga participants.  So far, ha pagkayana, wara pa data an amon munisipyo.  Pero, paniningkamutan nga magkaada kami hin data agud mahigamitan ini nga training on mapping & geo-tagging.  Upat gud ini katuig ngan kurso pa ini ha pangiskwelahan, pero ha yana, kuha ta la hin duha kaadlaw.  Magkarit gud kita!”

Resource person for the workshop was Mr. Arnel Nombre of DA-RFO 8.

The training was conducted on Sept. 21-22, 2022 at the Dream Horizon Event Center in Borongan City, E. Samar.
