DILIMAN, Quezon City—For around 10 years, All Seasons Nature Farm owner Henry James Sison has been keenly practicing natural farming methods for crop, livestock, and poultry production, with brown eggs as one of the farm’s main products.

“With brown eggs, it’s differentiated. Our protocols are organic and not everybody does organic. You can easily claim a spot in the market,” Sison said in an interview on the Agricultural Training Institute’s (ATI) teleradyo program.

At present, Sison supplies brown eggs to supermarkets, specialty stores for organic and natural products, and individual resellers.

“We started with neighbors and acquaintances. Then I started calling the people who usually source out eggs,” he recalled.

In raising chickens, Sison follows the Philippine National Standard for organic agriculture wherein the chickens are raised as humanely as possible in a free-range setup. He also uses natural ingredients for feeds such as rice bran, corn, and copra meal.

“When the chickens are stressed, the egg production will be irregular. It will be hard for you to forecast the volume of production for the day or the week. If the chickens are less stressed, we feel that the eggs they produce are healthier,” the Batangas-based farmer explained.

The chickens at All Seasons Nature Farm are from the Dekalb Brown breed. But, according to Sison, there are many options such as heritage breeds and the native Philippine breed.

Sison stressed the importance of keeping clean surroundings for the chickens to prevent diseases, and of having them checked regularly by a veterinarian. For would-be raisers, his advice is to start with around 300 heads of chicken and to use natural food sources to cope with the rising prices of poultry feeds in the market.

Sison’s full interview on ATI’s “Agri Asenso” last July 30, 2022 is available for livestreaming at www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2036125573226604. For more on brown eggs, visit the All Seasons Nature Farms official Facebook page (@AllSeasonsNatureFarms).
