PASAY CITY- Some 145 youth who completed their internship under the guidance of their mentors and farm partners were recognized during the First National Youth Internship Program for Organic Agriculture (YIPOA) Graduation Ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in this city.

The YIPOA is a 21-month internship where enrolled youth beneficiaries from the different regions are engaged in practical and field-based learning under the guidance of farm mentors and partners from the accredited Learning Sites for Agriculture and Extension Service Providers of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI). They were trained in organic crop production and management, livestock raising, fishery, production of natural fertilizer and pesticides, food processing, farm machinery operation and troubleshooting, among others.

Moreover, the program is an initiative of the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the joint effort of the Institute ATI with the DA-National Organic Agriculture Program and the participating farm partners nationwide to promote sustainable and organic farming practices while nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, represented by Usec. Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero, remarked “As each graduate embarks on their future endeavors, let us recognize that they are part of a larger movement toward sustainable agriculture, carrying immense potential for both our nation and the planet.” He added that in this manner, the sector could collectively embrace positive change and envision for a better future for all Filipinos.

Likewise, ATI Director Remelyn Recoter imparted her challenge to the graduates to be the future leaders in organic agriculture and recognize their role as “architects of the food systems” in the country. Recoter stressed that the knowledge and expertise they have acquired through the program could help them advocate the sustainable farming practices in their respective communities. She urged the youth beneficiaries to “engage actively with your fellow farmers, disseminate your insights on eco-friendly techniques, and galvanize others to join this vital movement.”

Director Recoter also extended her gratitude to the farm partners around the archipelago, particularly the ATI Learning Sites for Agriculture and Extension Service Providers. “We are truly grateful for your warmth and openness to brave this venture with us. Without you, this feat would not be as fulfilling and impactful as it is today,” she added.

Additionally, each graduate received a Php 150,000 grant to serve as the starting capital for their intended farm business.

The graduation was held last December 17, 2024 in Pasay City.
