Sogod, S. Leyte - There are many platforms available that can be used to address concern in the agriculture industry. One such platform is the Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS). It is a free and open-source cross-platform desktop geographic information system (GIS) application which allows the viewing, editing, printing, and analysis of geospatial data. This is being used by the Department of Agriculture in addressing the African Swine Fever (ASF) concerns in the country, specifically for ASF-1-7-10 biosecurity protocol.

ATI RTC 8 conducted the ASF Quantum Geographic Information System Workshop (Batch 1) in preparation for the implementation of the ASF Quantum Geographic Information System inf Eastern Visayas.

During the 2-day activity, participants learned about the quantum geographic information system, map lay-outing, density mapping , and data encoding prior to immersing themselves in a mapping workshop.

During the workshop, all participants sketched and illustrated the geographic location coordinates of the sample infected farm sites and positioned the 500 sq. meter red zone for depopulation. The 7km radius surveillance zone (yellow zone) and 10km radius protected zone (light green zone) were also plotted to show the color coded maps using the data from geo tagged farms in the municipality infected with ASF disease.

Ms. Kisha Marie S. Salar of LGU-Bontoc enthused, “I really appreciate this workshop for ASF – QGIS because I learned how to do mapping, use GPS Essential App, lay-outing, and getting reliable coordinates. I can use the QGIS for efficient mapping of the affected areas in my municipality and I can also use it in conducting inventory.”

Mr. Trifon Jun F. Solana of LGU-Limasawa also shared, “The workshop is very timely and informative. There was a lot of new learning, good food, good accommodation, and good company. This workshop taught me the know-hows of lay-outing as well as reading maps. This would help hasten and generate accurate response in the field most especially when it comes to ASF cases.”

The workshop was conducted on June 15-16, 2022 at Sogod, S. Leyte with 20 participants from the province.
