Symposium lauds women’s contribution to agriculture

Baybay City, Leyte – There are many gender-specific challenges in agriculture that put women at a disadvantage. Hence, policies, strategies, and opportunities are continuously put in place to bridge the gaps and empower women in agriculture.

As March is celebrated as National Women’s Month, ATI RTC 8 made it a point to conduct the Symposium on Women in Agriculture to heighten awareness of gender sensitivity, and promote gender equality and harmonious relationship between men and women in the community. The theme for the symposium was “Rural Women in Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society”.

On March 9-10, 2023, women farmers and members of Rural Improvement Clubs trooped to ATI RTC 8 to participate in the symposium.  The activity showcased the accomplishments of rural women in developing the agriculture sector and how these made a significant impact in the lives of the people in their communities. Resource persons during the activity were Ms. Emelie B. Cahingcoy (Brgy. Tigbao, Carigara, Leyte); Atty. Jonalyndie B. Chua (DSWD FO 8); Dr. Wayne P. Gunhuran    (Baybay City Health Office); Ms. Gravela O. Rele ( Farmvhel, Brgy. Sabang-Bao, Ormoc City); and Ms. Josephine L. Hipe (DOH-PITAHC, Brgy. Bagacay, Tacloban City). Topics discussed included the rights stipulated in VAWC and Anti-Bastos Law and traditional and alternative health care through herbal soap & ointment making.  RICs and farms brought innovative or processed products to sell in the mini agri-fair.

Participants like Ms. Rosita Arbiol and Lolita Eder were thankful for their attendance to the activity because attendance to activities have helped hone their communication skills. It helped them gain confidence as women farmers. They were thankful to be in the presence of other women whom they can learn more from.

Thirty (30) participants attended the symposium held at ATI-RTC 8, VSU, Visca, Baybay City, Leyte.
