A Gateway to Opportunity
In the Philippines, where agriculture forms the backbone of the economy, the future of the sector lies in the hands of the next generation. Recognizing this, the EAsY Agri Program was established as a college scholarship grant aimed at supporting the children of smallholder farmers and fishers who have a passion for agriculture. This initiative offers them equal opportunities to pursue a degree in agriculture and related fields, paving the way for a brighter future not only for themselves but for the entire agricultural sector.
The program's mission is twofold: to enhance the competitiveness of Philippine agriculture and to uplift the socio-economic status of families in the agriculture and fisheries (AF) sector. By investing in the education of the youth, the EAsY Agri Program seeks to address the pressing issues of food security and rural poverty, ultimately contributing to a more prosperous and sustainable agricultural landscape in the country.
A Blessing in Disguise
Arnel Casido, a humble young man from Hinundayan, Southern Leyte, is one of the first twelve scholars of the EAsY Agri Program in Region 8. He started his journey in 2020 amid the challenges of the pandemic. Arnel's story is one of resilience, faith, and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education.
Growing up, Arnel faced numerous hardships. His father passed away when he was young, leaving his mother to shoulder the responsibility of providing for the family through farming. Despite these difficulties, Arnel held onto his dream of pursuing higher education. Inspired by his sister, who graduated with the help of a 4Ps scholarship, Arnel prayed for a similar opportunity. He knew that without financial assistance, attending college would be nearly impossible.
It was through the ATI-RTC 8 Scholarship Coordinator, Ms. Maria Helen Seco that Arnel learned about the EAsY Agri Program. He received the life-changing news that he was selected as a scholar. For Arnel, this scholarship was an answered prayer—a blessing in disguise that opened the door to his future.
Education as a Weapon for Change
Arnel's motivation to pursue the scholarship stemmed from his belief that education is the only weapon that can change one's life. Determined to lift his family out of poverty and honor his father's memory, Arnel chose to study BS Agriculture, majoring in Agricultural Extension. His choice was deeply personal; as the son of a farmer, he had firsthand experience of the struggles faced by marginalized farmers. He knew that with proper education and support, these farmers could improve their livelihoods.
"I really wanted to help them," Arnel explains. "I wanted to share what I learned because our farmers really need education." His desire to empower farmers and introduce them to new agricultural technologies motivated him to continue his studies beyond a bachelor’s degree. Currently, Arnel is pursuing a master’s degree to further equip himself with the knowledge and skills necessary to serve his community better.
Overcoming Challenges: The Road to Success
The journey to success was not without its trials. Arnel recalls the difficulties of studying during the pandemic, with slow internet connectivity and the challenges of adjusting to online learning. Even after the pandemic, the transition back to face-to-face classes was tough. Yet, through hard work, prayers, and unwavering dedication, Arnel managed to maintain the grades required to keep his scholarship.
What made the scholarship truly special, according to Arnel, was not just the financial support but the holistic approach it offered. The program provided emotional support, academic training, review sessions, field exposure, and team-building activities, all of which played a crucial role in shaping Arnel’s educational experience. He credits Ms. Seco, their scholarship coordinator, for being a motherly figure who ensured that all their needs were met, making their academic journey less daunting.
A Message of Hope and Determination
"Success is not given freely," Arnel reminds the current and future scholars of the EAsY Agri Program. "It is hard-earned. You cannot achieve something if you do nothing." He encourages his fellow scholars to view challenges as opportunities, to aim for excellence, and to never be afraid to ask for help. Most importantly, Arnel emphasizes the importance of faith, believing that God’s plans are always bigger and better than our own.
Arnel’s hard work paid off when he graduated from Visayas State University on August 6, 2024, with the honor of Magna cum Laude. Though he had hoped to graduate with honors, the reality of it was a humbling and gratifying experience. His excitement grew when he was invited to meet with the management of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) Central Office as the top scholar in Region 8. For Arnel, this was not only his first plane ride but also a significant moment of recognition for his achievements.
A Heartfelt Conclusion: Gratitude and Giving Back
Meeting with the leaders of ATI and fellow scholars from other regions, Arnel realized how much the EAsY Agri Program had given him—a gift of education, a hope for the future, and a chance to make his dreams a reality. "All I can say is that each of us were given this big opportunity," Arnel reflects. "If it weren’t for ATI, we wouldn’t have achieved these things at such a young age. That is why I am so happy, grateful, and privileged to be given this opportunity."
As Arnel looks to the future, he remains committed to his goal of helping farmers and giving back to the community that raised him. His story is a testament to the power of education, the importance of resilience, and the impact that a single scholarship can have on the lives of those who dare to dream. Through the EAsY Agri Program, Arnel has not only transformed his own life but is now equipped to uplift others, planting seeds of hope in the hearts of farmers and their families across the Philippines.
